The Evolution of the BMW M5: Every Generation of the Super Saloon
The BMW M5 is the benchmark for high-performance sedans, blending luxury with serious power. Since its debut in the 1980s, it has evolved through multiple generations, each redefining what a four-door sports car can be. Let’s take a look at how the M5 has changed over the years.
E28 M5 (1985-1988)
The original M5 was a sleeper—understated looks hiding a 3.5L inline-six from the legendary M1. Producing 282 hp, it was the fastest sedan of its time and set the tone for future generations.
E34 M5 (1988-1995)
Hand-built and powered by an improved 3.6L (later 3.8L) straight-six, the E34 refined the formula. With up to 335 hp, it balanced performance and luxury, solidifying the M5’s reputation.
E39 M5 (1998-2003)
A fan favourite, the E39 introduced a 4.9L V8 with 394 hp. With a manual gearbox and a perfectly balanced chassis, it’s still considered one of the best M5s ever made.
E60 M5 (2005-2010)
The wildest M5 yet—featuring a screaming 5.0L V10 producing 500 hp. Paired with a (controversial) SMG transmission, it brought F1-inspired performance to the sedan world.
F10 M5 (2011-2016)
BMW downsized to a twin-turbo V8, producing 553 hp. Though heavier than its predecessors, it was brutally fast, with a 0-60 time of just over 4 seconds.
F90 M5 (2017-2024)
The first M5 with all-wheel drive, the F90 packs a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 with up to 617 hp (in Competition form). Despite the added tech, it remains a driver’s car, with a rear-wheel-drive mode for purists.
G90 M5 (2024-Present)
The 2025 BMW M5's new plug-in-hybrid powertrain combines a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine with an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Dividing opinion due to a huge weight and size increase, as well as performance figures which don't surpass previous models, only time will tell if the G90 can live up to the M5 name.
From a manual straight-six to a high-tech twin-turbo V8, the M5 has evolved while staying true to its roots. With the next generation set to introduce hybrid technology, the future of the M5 looks just as exciting. Which M5 generation is your favourite? Let us know in the comments!
